Mom’s Buttermilk Brownies

Brownies

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in bowl. In saucepan, combine butter, cocoa, and water. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add to flour mixture. Beat until thoroughly combined. Add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Beat 1 minute. Pour into greased 15 x 10 x 1 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Toothpick should be clean. Cool slightly in pan on cooling rack.

Frosting

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 3 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Optional: 3/4 cup chopped pecans

In saucepan, combine butter, cocoa, and buttermilk. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla. Stir in chopped pecans. Pour warm frosting over warm brownies.
